Effects on Sibling Relationships When One Sibling Has Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Critical Review

Sibling relationships in general have been overlooked and understudied by researchers. While the topic has drawn more attention in recent years, the study of sibling relationships when one sibling has autism is still limited. This paper is a critical review of current literature on sibling relationships focusing on sibling relationship quality, social interactions, and adjustment of typically developing children who have a sibling with autism. Family systems theory, ecological theory, and social learning theory were also used to look at the associations between sibling relationship quality and parental differential treatment.
